A STUDY OF LANGUAGE IN THAI INCANTATIONS: DIMENSIONS OF BELIEFS AND MEANING MAKING

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic characteristics of Thai incantations by examining the relationship between language, beliefs, and meaning-making in Thai society. The study employs qualitative research methodology through document analysis and in-depth interviews with experts in Thai incantations. The findings reveal that the language used in Thai incantations possesses unique characteristics in terms of word choice, composition, and the integration of Pali-Sanskrit languages, reflecting Thai belief systems, worldviews, and wisdom. Furthermore, the study finds that meaning-making in incantations is complex, operating at both denotative and connotative levels, which are deeply connected to Thai social and cultural contexts.
