World Vesak Day: The Meaning of Universal Faith

Abstract

This article, "A Path to Awakening, Peace, and Shared Human Values," aims to explain the significance of Vesak Day as the most important day in Buddhism. It commemorates three significant events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and death (parinirvana), reflecting the process of discovering the truth of life and liberation from suffering. The article presents the history of Vesak Day, key Buddhist principles, particularly the Four Noble Truths, and the concepts of mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion for the pursuit of peace—values applicable to all societies. Furthermore, it discusses the United Nations' recognition of Vesak Day as an international day in 1999, reflecting the value of Buddhist teachings as a spiritual heritage of humanity. The article concludes that Vesak Day is not merely a religious ceremony, but an opportunity to reflect on life, develop the mind, and create peace at both individual and global levels through a sustainable life guided by mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion.
