BUDDHIST AESTHETICS: THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY IN THAI BUDDHIST ART

Abstract

This article aims to explain the concept of Buddhist aesthetics as the science of beauty that expresses spirituality and wisdom according to Buddhist principles, through the beautiful, profound, and meaningful forms of Thai art. The beauty in Thai Buddhist art is not focused on form, color, or craftsmanship, but also on spiritual beauty, connecting art with the process of awareness of the hidden Dharma within the work. Currently, many Thai artists convey Buddhist principles in painting, sculpture, and architecture. Therefore, Buddhist art serves to evoke visual appreciation, prompting introspective reflection and inspiring a life guided by mindfulness and wisdom. Thus, Thai Buddhist art should not be considered merely a cultural heritage, but rather an artistic language of Dharma, reflecting the Thai spirit and profound faith in Buddhism. Exploring the concept of Buddhist aesthetics within the context of Thai art, and analyzing the spiritual and aesthetic values embedded within the works, reveals that Thai Buddhist art plays a significant role in shaping people's minds towards peace, beauty, and wisdom within the context of contemporary society.
