Creating a Safe Learning Environment in Nursing Education: The Role of Communication from the Heart

In nursing education, students encounter various pressures, including the intensity of academic content, classroom hierarchy, professional expectations, and evaluation systems that emphasize correct answers rather than the thinking process. These factors often make learners hesitant to ask questions or acknowledge what they do not know. Even experiential learning activities, such as simulation exercises designed for practice, are frequently perceived as part of an assessment rather than as opportunities for genuine learning. This psychological insecurity has become a significant barrier to effective learning.
This article examines whether a “safe learning environment” can truly be achieved if we begin with “communication from the heart.” It introduces two approaches Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and Coaching Principles that emphasize non-judgmental listening, emotionally connected speaking, and respectful questioning as means of creating a reflective and supportive learning space where students can grow from within.
A review of theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence reveals that heartfelt communication fosters trust, reduces fear, and encourages learners to express their thoughts openly. The article argues that establishing a safe learning environment in nursing education requires educators to shift their role rom being controllers of knowledge to becoming coaches and listeners who engage with empathy, understanding, and respect for the learner. Such a transformation promotes mutual trust and collaboration, enabling nursing students to learn meaningfully and develop into compassionate, reflective practitioners.
