Abstract

This research article aimed to 1) compare Grade 8 students’ English reading comprehension ability before and after instruction using the 5W1H technique combined with gamification and 2) examine Grade 8 students’ satisfaction with the instruction. The research design was pre-experimental research using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The population consisted of 50 Grade 8 students. The sample consisted of 25 Grade 8 students in Class 2/1, selected through cluster random sampling. The research instruments included lesson plans evaluated by experts at the highest level of appropriateness (M = 5.00), a 30-item, 4-option multiple-choice English reading comprehension test with an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00 and a reliability coefficient using Kuder-Richardson (KR-20) of 0.88, and a 5-point Likert scale, 20-item satisfaction questionnaire with a Content Validity Index (CVI) of 1.00 and a Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of 0.92. Data collection was conducted through a pretest, 4 lesson plans (8 periods in total), a posttest, and the satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean (M), standard deviation (S.D.), dependent samples t-test, and Hake's normalized gain score.

The results revealed that 1) Grade 8 students instructed using the 5W1H technique combined with gamification showed significantly higher English reading comprehension ability after instruction (M = 26.36, S.D. = 1.44) than before instruction (M = 13.20, S.D. = 2.55) at the .05 level of statistical significance (p < .05), with a mean normalized gain of 0.78, which was at a high level, and 2) overall student satisfaction with the instruction was at a high level (M = 3.84, S.D. = 0.17).
