AN IMPROVEMENT OF ENGLISH READING SKILLS THROUGH SQ5R FOR GRADE 10 STUDENTS AT DEBSIRIN CHIANG MAI SCHOOL

Abstract

This research article aims to: 1) compare English reading achievement using the SQ5R learning management approach among Grade 10 students at Debsirin School, Chiang Mai; and 2) to examine the opinions of Grade 10 students’ at Debsirin School, Chiang Mai toward learning through the SQ5R learning management approach. The sample consisted of 20 Grade 10 students from Debsirin School, Chiang Mai, selected through simple random sampling. The research employed a quasi-experimental design using a single experimental group, with pre-test and post-test measurements. The research instruments included a lesson plan, an English reading achievement test based on the SQ5R learning approach, and a student opinion questionnaire. Data were analyzed using basic statistical method, including mean, standard deviation, and a dependent sample t-test.

          The results revealed that (1) students’ English reading achievement after instruction using the SQ5R learning management approach was significantly higher than before instruction at the .05 level of statistical significance, and (2) students’ opinions toward learning through SQ5R-based activities were at the highest level, with a mean score of = 4.65 and a standard deviation of 0.88.
