THE LANGUAGE USE IN THAI FOLK HEALER'S SOUL CALLING RITUAL: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY

This academic article aims to examine the language use in soul calling rituals performed by Thai folk healers through ethnographic research methodology. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with 15 folk healers in central and northern Thailand. The findings reveal distinctive linguistic features in soul calling ceremonies, including lexical, syntactic, and semantic characteristics. The study found the use of archaic terms, compound words, and rhyming patterns, along with specific word ordering and symbolic meanings that reflect traditional beliefs about soul and spirit. Furthermore, the role of language in rituals proved significant in healing and building patient confidence. This study reflects the relationship between language, beliefs, and traditional Thai healing practices.
