The objectives of this study were (1) to investigate the efficiency of using Kahoot in improving and retaining students’ English vocabulary knowledge, (2) to utilize Kahoot as an instructional tool to improve students’ vocabulary knowledge, and (3) to explore students’ satisfaction with learning English vocabulary through the use of Kahoot. This study employed a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design with a delayed post-test. The participants were 14 Grade 9 students enrolled in the Fundamental English course during the second semester of the 2025 academic year at Choomchonwatkokklang “Sramakhawittaya” School, Buriram, Thailand. The participants were selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of six Kahoot-based lesson plans, a 60-item English vocabulary test, and a satisfaction questionnaire. The lesson plans and satisfaction questionnaire were reviewed and validated by three experts, with Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00. Prior to the main study, the vocabulary test was administered in a pilot study to establish its reliability, yielding a KR-20 coefficient of .914. The data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, a dependent-samples t-test, and Cohen’s d effect size.
The findings revealed that students’ post-test scores ( = 40.93, S.D. = 10.12) were significantly higher than their pre-test scores ( = 31.21, S.D. = 8.73), t(13) = 7.10, p < .001, with a large effect size (d = 1.03). Furthermore, no significant difference was found between the post-test scores ( = 40.93, S.D. = 10.12) and the delayed post-test scores ( = 40.43, S.D. = 10.96), t(13) = 0.46, p = .656, with a negligible effect size (d = 0.05), indicating retention of vocabulary knowledge. Students also reported a high level of satisfaction with learning through Kahoot ( = 4.22, S.D. = 0.64). The findings suggest that Kahoot was effective in improving and retaining students’ English vocabulary knowledge while promoting positive learning experiences in an EFL classroom.
