A Concept of Vivekā in Tharavada Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract

This article aims to present Vivekā or seclusion in Tharavada Buddhist scriptures. There found 3 types of seclusion: 1) Kāyavivek or bodily seclusion, the non-mingling with the disturbed environment, living in solitude place, it refers to Buddhist precepts which is the cause of sorrow, physical and verbal harm, 2) Cittavivek, the seclusion of physical and verbal acts with meditation, subduing all hindrance with mental development, 3) Upadhiviveka or complete mental seclusion, referring to the end of desire and lust, where passion is completely extinguished. These 3 Viveka can be used as an applied model for peace of society because only peaceful community leads to happiness. At first precepts of morality prevent form wrong behavior of commutants. Having a moral deed in both of physical and verbal acts, their mind will be full of compassion helping and supporting each other as Buddha said loving kindness sustain the world peace.
