Analysis of Research Funding Structure for Strategic Management: A Case Study of the Multidisciplinary Research Institute, Chiang Mai University During the Fiscal Years 2023-2025

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the structure and proportion of research funding sources classified by research platforms at the Multidisciplinary Research Institute (MDRI), Chiang Mai University, during the fiscal years 2023–2025. This descriptive research employed a census approach using secondary data collected from all 357 research projects, with a total budget of 296.43 million baht. The statistical methods used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, and growth rate. The findings revealed that the institute relied heavily on national external funding and specialized funding sources. Major funding agencies included the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU-A), the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO). These funding sources played a significant role in driving research activities and enhancing the institute’s competitiveness. However, excessive dependence on a limited number of high-value external funding sources may increase volatility and structural vulnerability when project cycles come to an end. In contrast, internal funding schemes, such as the Fundamental Fund and Research Group Development Grants, although accounting for a smaller proportion of the total budget, played a crucial role in sustaining the research ecosystem and continuously strengthening researchers’ capacities in a stable manner. The findings underscore the importance of analyzing research funding structures as empirical evidence that can support strategic planning and budget risk management. The results may also serve as valuable information for decision-making under the Education Criteria for Performance Excellence (EdPEx) framework and for further improving the institute’s research management system and strategic management practices in the future.
