As the symbol of Chinese culture, Chinese characters not only carry meanings and information, fulfil the basic function of communication, but also have their own unique way to express meaning and logic, which are different from phonetic characters. Besides, characters also inherited the thought and wisdom of Chinese for thousands of years. However, because of their special way to express meaning and their multitudinous shapes, characters teaching has always been a difficulty in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and has become one of the reasons why learners consider Chinese language is “difficult”. Over past 30 years, many efforts have been made to raise the status of Chinese characters, reduce the difficulty of learning, and improve the quality of teaching. Therefore, the situation of characters teaching has been improved significantly , but it is still “lagging behind” in the whole education. In order to analyze the current situation of Chinese characters teaching, this research selects two comprehensive textbooks, HSK Standard Courses and Hanyu Courses as research materials, to analyze the current problems and propose some new teaching ideas.
